Women Of Shropshire - Women Making History

As an Artichoke Heart, I was so pleased to receive my copy of Artichoke's book on the Processions 2018 mass participation artwork to celebrate 100 years since some women became eligible for the vote in Britain. It's a beautiful book showcasing the 100 large banners made with 100 artists across the country. The 'Women of Shropshire Banner' is one that I participated in with Disability Arts in Shropshire (DASH) and Shropshire Subversive Stitchers under the gentle artistic direction of Anne Marie Lagram, looks stunning.

I want to highlight the important component of the banner that was the chain. Each chain link was created by a county woman whether she recognised herself as an artist or otherwise. We carried the chain on our backs through Cardiff as part of the banner, bringing each woman who had been unable to travel, with us. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have made it as an element of the book. I didn't want these women's contributions to be overlooked or forgotten; for me, the chain was integral to the design even if the computer, at book production, seems to have said, 'No.'

The culture which dominated the planning and making of this banner was one of inclusion and celebration. It was my first time meeting these groups and it was to be for my very good fortune. Everybody's contribution was valued. I love the fact that the central theme was 'We Are Here', as many felt that the population of the UK didn't know where Shropshire was, let alone recognise its women.
